slip is liquid clay - it has the consistency of melted ice cream. slip binds together two pieces of clay, as it dries, it acts as glue and bonds the clay together, and once fully glazed & fired, works very well at permanently connecting pieces of clay.
we "score" the two pieces of clay we're going to attach, before we add slip. scoring is creating a hatched texture on the clay, so that the slip can permeate more of the clay body and create a solid bond, rather than just laying two pieces of clay flat on one another, slipping and scoring allows the clay to interlock, creating a stronger bond.
make your own slip by soaking a little bit of your clay in water, allow it to soak overnight, then mix it up until you find it's reached that thick, creamy consistency.
